An island cut along its ridges

On an island every river is its own story: none of them flows into another big river, each one runs to the sea by itself, so the water map of Sardinia is a ring of basins around a mountainous core. The Tirso is the longest, running from the middle of the island to the Gulf of Oristano, and its basin is the biggest piece. Where the mountains stand close to the sea, on the east coast and in the south-west, there is no room for a long river, and the pieces are coastal stretches of short, steep streams, named for their coasts: Ogliastra, Baronia, Sarrabus, Iglesiente. Put it next to the provinces plate and you can see how little the two ways of cutting the island agree.
