Barichara
One creek valley below a colonial town
▶ Play it onlineBarichara is a stone town on the edge of a plateau, high above the canyon of the Suárez. The creek that carries its rain away runs west past the town and drops into the river below, and this plate is that creek's whole valley, cut into the hollows and side-streams that feed it. At about 85 metres to the millimetre it is the most detailed plate in the collection: five levels above it this valley is a sliver of South America, and here every fold of ground around the town is something you can hold.
What a child works out
- Even one small creek has a territory, and it has pieces too.
- The town is on the high ground; the water always finds the low ground.
- Scale is a choice: the same place can be a speck or a whole plate.
