Twenty regions, one spine
▶ Play it onlineItaly is the best argument for relief mapping in Europe: it is a mountain range with coastline on both sides, and every regional boundary in the middle of the country is a negotiation with the Apennines. Sicily and Sardinia come off as their own pieces. The Po plain in the north reads as the only genuinely flat thing on the plate, which is exactly why it holds most of the country's industry.
What a child works out
- The Apennines run the whole way down — Italy is a ridge with edges.
- Regions in the mountains are shaped differently from regions on the plain.
- Islands are pieces too.
