Eight provinces on a mountain island
Sardinia looks calm from the sea and is anything but underneath: most of the island is hills and mountains, from the granite of Gallura in the north-east to the Gennargentu massif in the middle, and the one real plain, the Campidano, runs as a diagonal lowland from Cagliari to Oristano. You can feel all of it on this plate. The borders are the newest in the collection: the island's provinces have been redrawn several times in twenty years, and this is the 2025 map, with the metropolitan cities of Cagliari and Sassari and the provinces of Gallura, Nuoro, Ogliastra, Oristano, Medio Campidano and Sulcis Iglesiente. It is also the Sardegna piece of the Italy plate, cut again at its own scale.
